Case 1: Mr. and Mrs. A (Bridlington, East Yorkshire, England)

Mr. and Mrs. A is a couple with multiple health issues, rendering them both vulnerable and dependent on each other. Mr. A has Multi-system Atrophy, a rare disease that causes the mind and body to shut down completely while Mrs. A has Multiple Sclerosis, Angina and Cervical Spondylitis.

Before Mr. A was diagnosed with his disease, it was difficult for him to take a break from caring for Mrs. A. Mrs. A cannot be left alone without anyone there to help her. When Mr. A was diagnosed with his rare disease, he often left the gas on the cooker and he eventually lost his sense of smell and taste. Mr. A also suffered from dizzy spells and had fallen several times.

Mrs. A first had Telecare installed in 1989, so she could press her pendant and call for help when her husband was out. Mr. A also got himself his own pendant.

Mrs. A said, “It makes a big difference mentally. We have used the service when we had a flood in the hall very late at night and when the hot water boiler burst and flooded the kitchen. Each time, the operator got help for us very quickly which we wouldn’t have been able to do ourselves. Also we have used it to get a doctor and ambulances very quickly for both myself and my husband who is now terminally ill. It is on their system at the control centre, that if we need help for him, then it is even more of an emergency and they are always so helpful.”

Case 2: Nicole, Scotland

Nicole is a mother of two, who suffers from diabetes. The disease got worse in 2003, when she experienced more severe hypos that leaves her in need of more medication and attention. Due to her medical condition, her family has to call several times a day to check on her and Nicole’s husband has cut down on his working hours to come home to look after her.

When Nicole signed up for Telecare’s personal reassurance alarms, she is fully protected with several home sensors, including the fall detector and the Amie. If she ever has a relapse or if she needs help, she can press the button or the fall detector will send out a signal to call for help.

Nicole’s two children also watches out for their mother daily. “I think my mum’s a lot safer. And we know how to press the button if mum falls over,” Nicole’s children said.
